Cast stone or reconstructed stone is a concrete masonry form of artificial stone that simulates natural cut stone used in unit masonry applications. Cast stone is an excellent replacement for natural cut limestone, brownstone, sandstone, bluestone, granite, slate, coral, travertine, and other natural building stones as well as terra-cotta. It is used for architectural features: trim, or ornament; facing buildings or other structures; statuary;  garden ornaments. Cast stone can be made from white and/or grey cements, manufactured or natural sands, crushed stone or natural gravels, and colored with mineral coloring pigments to achieve the desired color and appearance while maintaining durable physical properties which exceed most natural cut building stones.

Brief History of Cast Stone:

The earliest known use of Cast Stone dates about to the year 1138 and extensively used in London in the year 1900 and have gained widespread acceptance in America in 1920.

Today, Cast Stone have become a truly superior alternative to natural stone product. Its versatility and ability to simulate or reproduce almost limitless variety of natural stones combined with strength and weathering qualities, and ability to replicate with consistency makes cast stone an ideal material for building, remodeling, and restoration.

Additional information is available on link pages. Organizations such as the Cast Stone Institute (http://caststone.org/) and the AIA (https://www.aia.org/) will further provide more detail information on Cast Stone and its process.

1st.. Thank you for selecting True Stone Masonry as your cast stone company.

2nd.. Cast stone is typically a maintenance free material however, depending on surrounding environment, weathering, beverages and food stains, and construction site scenario may require cleaning cast stone a necessary.

There are a few items we should mention to help ensure a proper care and procedure on cleaning your cast stone. We always recommend contacting a qualified masonry contractor to wash your cast stone.

If that option is not available the standard normal process depending on the stain or how soiled is as follows:

  1. Soak/wet/drench thoroughly all the surrounding cast stone.
  2. Use a mild detergent and water then scrubbed with a fiber brush thoroughly.
  3. Rinsed with clean running water.

This is for guideline and reference only: Listed below are possible solutions that may help remove or clean different stains/soil in your cast stone.

Precautionary Reminder Please Protect yourself by wearing gloves and use only specific cleaners designed for their specific purpose. If uncertain contact the cleaner manufacturer or do a test area in in an inconspicuous area, before applying the cleaner.

Do Not Use a Metal Brush! Power washing and sandblasting are not recommended!

Reminder: Acids left on the stone may cause corrosion problems so it is important to do a proper rinsing/frequently drench to prevent corrosion.

  • Algae – use a solution containing a biocide to kill spore or a diluted household or use bleach solution. (note if using a bleach or acid solution, it is important to rinse thoroughly and use plenty of water.)
  • Beverages and Food – use a PH neutral non acidic cleaner.
  • Copper and Metals – use a phosphoric acid based cleaner.
  • Grease and Oil – use a non-acidic cleaner/degreaser with warm water.
  • Mold and Mildew – use a biocide to kill mold spores or bleach solution.
  • Mortar – use an acid-based cleaner suggested for mortar material.
  • Paint – use a masonry paint stripper suggested for cast stone.

For situation that is not listed here and if you need more info on CARE & MAINTENANCE – you can contact us directly through this website or via phone or email or for more informative guide on cast stone cleaning process go to Portland Cement Association.
